Water supply on the World Water Day
The World Water Day takes places annually on the 22nd of march. The UN´s goal is to raise the awareness for the water scarcity worldwide. Availability and sustainable watermanagement should be a standard everywhere in 2030. Globally the supply of clean water is a big problem.
Today, 2.1 billion people don´t have a safe access to clean, drinkable water. Households, schools, workplaces, farms and factories are struggling to survive and thrive. One in four primary schools have no drinking water service. Many girls and women are not educated, because in eight out of ten households they are responsible for water collection and have no opportunity to go to school. They often walk long, difficult ways to get to the sources, as 80% of the people, who have to use unsafe and unprotected water sources, live in rural areas.
160 million people need to collect their drinking water from surface water, such as ponds and streams. Polluted water is risky, as it can cause diseases or death cases. The increasing number of refugees in the last years leads to bottlenecks. But water scarcity itself can be a cause of migration: in 2030 700 million people worldwide could be displaced by intense water scarcity.
Whoever you are, wherever you are, water is your human right. We cannot move forward as a global society while so many people are living without safe water.
